Cable/Harness Testing Made Easy.

Can you find broken strands? We've been asked this question many times over the years. Have you ever seen a cable assembly with broken wire strands or strands outside the crimp? It would be great if normal testing could find these faults. With such a visible defect, shouldn't your cable/harness tester find it? Imagine someone presents you with a cable assembly that has an obvious flaw. One of the strands of a wire is dangling outside of a crimp. It is not even close to shorting something out but it's an embarrassment that it made it through visual inspection and testing. Why didn't it fail with higher resistance, since that strand is obviously not connected? Can electrical testing be improved to find what inspection missed?

Perhaps a cable that is regularly flexed comes back from the field. You are asked to find a way to test if some of the strands are broken so that it can be replaced if needed.
