How to Develop Executive Leadership Skills

Over the past 14 years, we have been building a Virtual leadership & development platform to, firstly, assess leaders of mid and executive levels in a more efficient, cost-effective process, and, secondly, provide a smooth process of developing leadership skills. Our simulation software is used to assess leaders by immersing them in a realistic day-in-the-life experience of leadership. This brings us well informed and reliable data about who the leader is and what they can do today. What we’ve been doing with that data is bringing that into two important places of our platform- the leadership development and talent analytics. This provides more clarity and transparency in the current and future state of the talent in an organization.

The Pinsight app

The Pinsight App empowers employees to create lasting change while allowing organizations to track their improvements in real-time. The App uses baseline data from our leadership assessments and offers these key benefits:

On average, people start using the Pinsight app within a week, and they log to practice 3-4 practice days per week. We analyzed the internal data about the app usage by several thousand leaders and found that:

  • Those with higher learning aptitude are 2x more likely to use the app
  • Those who receive lower simulation scores are 2x more likely to use the app
  • Those who start practicing early are 2x more likely to keep using the app
  • Those in the tech industry are 3x more likely to use the app

When it comes to implementation, the quicker the organization can motivate leaders to start practicing their skills via the Pinsight app, the much more likely they will see higher adoption and increased duration and frequency of the app usage. By further analysis of the patterns of the app usage and comparing it with several of the outcomes that we’re tracking, we discovered this encouraging correlation:

The Development Dashboard

Although using The Pinsight App makes habit building and daily leadership development easier, leaders will still need support in their growth journeys. Different leaders will seek different types of support depending on their personal preferences and development progress.  To provide leaders with targeted support and meet them where they are, we have introduced the Development Dashboard.

While leaders use the Pinsight App to strengthen their skills, the Development Dashboard provides managers with greater visibility into a leader’s growth, their development priorities, and level of engagement with The Pinsight App.

The development dashboard shows the following metrics about the leader’s development: Days Practiced, Skills Practiced, Skill Priorities, Improvement Scores, Weekly Focus, Coaching Notes.

Finally, based on this data, the Development Dashboard provides Smart Coaching Suggestions targeted to each leader and their particular phase of development. These coaching recommendations enable organizations to provide hyper-personalized coaching to strengthen leaders’ motivation to continue smoothly in their development journey.
